| Deadman - Cerebral Frontier |
| Cerebral Frontier’ is the new EP by Belfast musician Jason Mills aka Deadman. His first release after a long hiatus, it is the result of a series of sessions with producer David Baxter (whose own material appears on a number of record labels under his Filaria moniker). These six tracks explore many territories, from lo-fi cinematic pieces to electronic spacerock. Whilst earlier home-based recordings were praised by the Northern Irish press, drawing comparisions to The Jesus and Mary Chain, Beck, Violent Femmes and Brian Eno, ‘Cerebral Frontier’ marks a shift to the high production values of a professional studio set-up. The music follows no fixed formula, instead creating a unique sound and feel by drawing on a plethora of styles. Opener ‘Amygdala’ was composed on vintage instruments for the soundtrack to the Irish post-apocalyptic film ‘Ditching’, which premiered in the 2009 Belfast Film Festival. Throughout the EP guest musicians drift in and out, lending their finesse; the desert blues jam meets spaghetti-western soundtrack of ‘Lysergic Lasso’ features Kinnego Flux on bass, drums and percussion, while the existential travelogue ‘Lonely Planet’ has Ellen Turley from Robyn G. Shiels’ band on backing vocals. |
